Need a 450 expert

Hello there, I have lurking on the site for some time reading and educating myself and am now at the point where I need to reach out to the group.

I came into the possession of 58 450 tractor in Jan of this year. It was my grandfathers tractor that he bought nearly new and kept until his passing in 2008. The tractor had last been started in 2004-05 time frame, with the motor locking up after this point. I did everything I know to get the motor un stuck but it was not happening so I ended up tearing it down. Once the head was off I found the all four pistons were stuck, two of them very badly. I got the two easy ones out and the other two eventually came out taking the liners with them.

I now have the all the pistons out, and the liners reinstalled. The pistons are in decent shape but the rings are bonded into the groves with corrosion. I have gotten the rings off of two pistons so far but it is not looking good for the other two.

Sorry for all the wind above, my questions are as follows:
-What or where is a good source to purchase pistons and or just piston rings? I find all kinds of rebuild kits but non where I can by engine component parts.
-Second question is in regard to ring size. The motor is a C281 but there are many different piston and ring options based on the size of the bore. I have measured the bores and they appear to be standard 4.125 but I am not generally seeing this in the listings.
-Lastly how sensitive is this motor? I am not and engine rebuild expert but I think I am competent to get the job done. If this is a very touch motor where every torque spec and clearance has to be exact then this may be out of my league.

Thank you,
Brian

you may buy an engine kit right on this site . they
are as good as the rest and reasonable come with all
you will need . liners, pistons and rings

no you don't have to be an expert but there are a
few on this site you can wait and see if they will
answer your questions or go it . it's a big 4
cylinder engine get the manual go with that .

I just put Super M liners and pistons in my M. First time for me
also.I would get an inframe overhaul kit on this website. Get an IT
manual for your tractor. You will need a about a 125 lb torque
wrench to torque the head bolts in the proper sequence. I would
also consider a valve job while the head is off. The best pistons in
the world are no good if you have bad valves. Just my two cents
worth.

Soak the pistons in vinegar and the rings will loosen up. Install the piston rings right and torque the bearings and head gaskets and you will do fine. These tractors were designed to be rebuilt under a shade tree or the middle of a field, they are about idiot proof(If I can do it anybody can)

If you just want to put new rings in it just go to a good parts house and take a piston along and they should be able to measure and order new rings for you. I use Carquest auto supply. HTH

You can buy individual pistons from A&I through a dealer. I use rustyfarmall.com

If you are interested, I have 4 brand new 4.125" 450 pistons that I would sell to you.

The engine is tough but not bullet proof and attention must be paid to details like torque specs, piston ring clearance, bearing clearance, proper orintation of the pistons and con rods.

Thanks for all the input is such as short period of time.

The pistons have been soaking and Kroil penetrating oil, the rings are laughing and not coming off.

I have a manual, it is and I&T shop service manual. It looks like a haynes manual of it's day. I know my grandfather used it at one time or another because the number three rod is different than the rest. Those of you who have use a factory shop manual and the after market versions, is the IH manual that much better? It has been my experience that the factory manual is usually better but being that it is 50 some years old I am not sure if the differences where that great.

I am going to keep working on the pistons and see how it goes.

Kirk, I would like to know what you want for the pistons as a back up plan.

Thank you,
Brian

Just a little update, the vinegar was the trick. The rings came out with some help from punch and some patience. I did ding up the piston grove a couple of time, can I smooth this down and make sure the new rings seat and move correctly?

I also honed the cylinder today, went pretty good. All the corrosion was removed and the liners are nice and clean now. I have not measured them but I have no reason to believe they would be out as they were on the tight side prior to the honing.

My last question, is there an easy way to post photos on this site. I have tried several times and I just can't get it right.

I forgot to mention, one of the reasons that I posted, I have a loader that appears to have come off a C model tractor. My grandfather put some brackets and extensions to get it to fit the 450. I took this off and have no plans to reinstall this, if any one is interested please let me know. Once I figure out how to post pictures I will post so you can see for your selves.
