plow question

The moldboards on my 2-14 little genius plow are worn out. they are plow chiefs with a detatchable shin. only problem is no one carries the moldboards i need. i did find one person but at $200 a piece! so i think i should try to switch bottoms? should i keep looking for the moldboard or buy either a super chief set-up or slatted moldboard set-up? also were the original little genius plows super chiefs since they were only two-piece bottoms? thanks in advance

The only type of bottoms still in production for IH plows are Super Chief.

What you do will depend on how much you plan to use the plow. If you only make a few rounds a year at a local plow day, then new moldboards will last you the rest of your life.

If you plan on plowing several acres a year, it may make financial sense to convert to Super Chief.

IMHO, your best bet is to find a newer 3pt plow for parts. A piece of personal advice, make sure you check the frogs for excessive wear. If someone ran the plow too long without replacing the shares and landsides, the frog gets wore out... Don't ask how I know.

Little Genius #8's were built from 27 to 1960 and could have come with any style of bottom. Blacksmith share bottoms, cast share and/or cast moldboards, Plow Chief, and Super Chief.
One option: the frog is the same for Plow Chief and Replaceable Shin Plow Chief, so that tells me you could cut up a solid moldboard and fit it up. Also, how 'wore out' is it? Is it something that a little welding couldn't build up?
My vote would be to keep your current bottoms. I thought the Replaceable shin Plow Chief wasn't common since I have never seen one in person, so I am surprised by how many show up on the web. And, I don't think you can beat Plow Chief when it comes to sinking into hard ground. With sharp points and sharp shares, they'll dig clear to China.

Must be a regional thing... I can't say as I've ever seen a Plow Chief that did NOT have a replaceable shin.

Messick's still lists replacement shins for the plow chief. Not cheap, but they got 'em. Or, I should say, they claim they can get 'em.
