IH 350 New Purchase....Questions

My father-in-law just bought a 350 utility. The pto won't turn on. It looks like some of the external shift linkage is loose. That is the first thing to fix. I tried to turn the shaft by hand but couldn't. Is there some sort of clutch inside the rear cover that can be serviced? Is there anything he should know about the TA? What is the right way to operate it? I have heard all sorts of horror stories about those. Thanks for any help.

Don't come here often. I usually hang out on the Oliver board.

Can't help on the PTO, but on the TA, don't hesitate, snap it in and snap it out when you use it. Also don't use it to slow down as they "free-wheel" on the low side.

Some farmalls have a seasonal pto disconnect do not know which ones or how to connect or disconnect. pull the Ta back fast and disengage fast. Use when the tractor starts to bog down under load. Do not use ta to slow down tractor.
good luck with the 350

There are two brake bands inside the rear cover. One makes the PTO go, the other makes it stop. You adjust them via two screws at the right side of the top of the rear PTO case. The adjustment procedure is well covered in the archives on this site. The control lever linkage is also adjustable.

If you need to access the bands for inspection or replacement, it's a very easy job although you'll probably need a puller to remove the rearmost drum. And make sure you're sitting down when you ask for a price; the bands are exorbitantly expensive.

One thing that no manual seems to mention: If you've decided to inspect the bands, first drain the oil from the rear PTO case by removing the plug at the lower left side of the case.

Tom is correct in some models having a seasonal disconnect. I myself purchased a SMTA thinking that the PTO didn"t work, but found out after getting it home it had been taken out of gear. The disconnect lever is underneath below the transmission. Its a lever about 4 inches long and 1 inch wide with two holes on one end. Simply take out the bolt on the end that has two holes and move the lever to one of the two threaded positions threaded in the casting of the transmission case to switch from engaged to disconnect. If the lever doesn"t want to engage fully you have to release the pto lever to release the pro brake bands and turn the pro shaft with a punch in the hole that"s on the end of the shaft to align the internal splines. Then the lever will fully engage. Hope its that simple for you. Like it was for Me. Most farmers would disengage them so if not in use. When engaged the bands are noisy. Good luck!

Loose linkage is 95% of the issue. It should not turn unless fully in the middle of the lever range, or ON (fully up and locked in with the pawl on the handle. It is common for this linkage to be toast. It is easy to fix and must be slop free to assure the bands are operating. Check the archives for a better description. Janicholson PTO adjust. Regarding the seasonal disconnect, as others have said, some tractors have it and some don't. My 300 Utility has one, but my 350 Utility doesn't. However, my operator's manual for the 350 Utility does mention it and tells how to use it.
