Cub hp question

Where did they get the hp increase in the later cubs ? I have a 50 cub that the engine is supposed to be a rebuild but I have a belly mower under it and I am looking to gain some hp. What can I use from the later cubs to help out. Thanks for any help you can give me

First thing is check that you are running rated RPMs. They are great for mowing lawns in low gear and not cutting high grass keeping blades sharp will help a bunch. Now if you want to bore the block and go to larger pistons you can gain a few HP but theres not a lot can be done with a 60cu in engine.

have the front of the deck 1/4" to 1/2" lower than the back.
mow at 3" or higher
use synthedic grease in the mower

Bigger bore on later Cubs, but on my 154 what helped mine was the Zenith carb. I may not have added any HP to it, but it "feels" stronger than it did on the IH carb. I can cut grass higher than I could before, but it still isnt a bushhog!
