Laying Plastic Mulch with a Farmall H

Yesterday"s Tractor and the people who post here have been very helpful to me fixing and modifying this tractor. It"s a 1952 Farmall H with a Schwartz wide front, Charlyn power steering, M&W live hydraulic pump, Delco vertical distributor, home made 3-point hitch and dual remotes. Thank you very much.

Those are some great shots! I'm doing a 3+ acre market garden this summer using my 3 Farmalls for all the chores. Debating on using some plastic mulch for some of my mellons and pumpkins. You think it is worth the expence?
What are you planting in your mulch rows?

Do you have any pictures of the hitch with no implements attatched? I would like to see the detail of the draw bar for trailing implements. Thank you. Armand

Thanks for the pictures. I like seeing tractors at work and owner modified equipment. To me, this is the essence of owning these old tractors. This country is fortunate in having a large inventory of inexpensive machines that can be utilized, modified, and serviced by those who need them.

We put down plastic mulch like that for cantelope, watermelon and pumpkins years ago. I wish we would have had that setup to lay the plastic!

The stabilizer bars came from Tractor Supply Co. They are also commonly available from other sources. We had to slightly bend and grind for our application.

I don't have any pictures now but I will take some in the next day or so and post them here. It is basically the Farmall U-shaped drawbar with 8 inches removed from each side to let the 3-point hitch arms come down beside it and a retractable extension on top.

Plastic mulch is definitely worth the expense. We plant lettuce and Swiss chard on white, cole crops on black at this point. Later tomatoes, zucchini, summer squash, cucumbers, pumpkins, winter squash. Basically anything from sets or from seed that grows in "hills". We have a Super-A, set wide with a modified cultivator with Danish tines to do between the rows. The sets are planted with a Holland 1265 transplanter.

I very much agree with you. There have been countless times I have come to this board to find answers to my tractor questions and just to see how other guys do stuff. It's ironic how the computer is a very important tool for keeping 50 and 60 year old tractors working and me in business.
