water pump packing

What exactly is water pump packing? Went to the dealer and got parts to rebuild water pump for the H .Parts man gave me bearings and seals and said thats all i needed, also sent me home with a parts diagram and part #'s .Guess what ,no packing. Is it like a O ring?

The packing is a seal for the shaft. Usually a graphite impregnated rope like material. You can make one yourself out of stock packing. or I am sure they come preformed to the correct size and should be available from IH.

I knew this and forgot to mention it. this is plagiarized for ease of posting.

"when all the packing is new several adjustments will be needed as the material compresses. The graphite is the lubricant but over tightening will ultimately score the shaft which if severe enough will prevent a proper seal. Many folks believe the final "correct" adjustment will allow a couple of drops to pass the packing every month or so.

When I repacked my 34 Eight about 40 years ago, I couldn't locate the split ring packing and just used standard chemical pump packing which is graphited round-section cord available in a variety of diameters. I used a fairly small diameter, perhaps 3/16" or so, and just wound and packed enough to fill the cavity. It has been very satisfatory, I did a tightening perhaps twice in the following days and haven't had to touch it for more than 40,000 miles. Some folks have suggested packing with small diameter teflon cord, but I've heard from others that it's less-compressible and not particularly satisfactory."
