I am restoring an M and I need to know what paint to use on the rims...is it gray, aluminum, or what? I'm sure this has been asked before but did not see it in the archives. thanks.

One popular treatment for rims now, is the rustoleum aluminum paint, applied with a brush. Be aware that it is thin paint and will require a couple of coats.

The last set of rims that I painted I used Rust-oleum Hammered and they turned out very nice. From a distent they look almost like gavanize.

I weld alot of outdoor galvanized panels together and when were done we buff with a twisted wire wheel on a 41/2" grinder and then cold galv them.

If you want the closest you can get to electroplate galvanizing there is no better product than this one http://www.nuwave-solutions.com/
There are other so called cold galv products but they are mostly grey paint, this one matches exactly and stays bright.

As a young boy, over 50 years ago, I observed a Farmall M being repainted at an IH dealer, and the guy doing the work was brush painting the rims with plain old aluminum paint. Nearly every H or M that I have seen since then has evidence of brush strokes on the rims. If you take your time, use a GOOD quality soft bristled brush, and really pay attention, you can eliminate the evidence of using a brush.

If you have the tires off of the rims, aluminum paint in an aerosol can works quite well.

I use aluminum paint, and it looks good. but the originals had a more dull looking galvenized coating. It's close and that is what most people use nowadays.

Use rustoleum aluminum paint. A 1 pint can is plenty if you can find one in your area. I use a sponge brush, that makes it easier to keep it from dripping on the tires.

heres a pic of an m i pained last year. the wheels are a gm wheel color, code wa 9021 done in diamont base clear. it is silver metallic, and was used on cadillac cts, gmc denali, pontiac g6, caddy sts, chevy tahoe and gmc yukon.

When I worked in the local IH dealer when we painted a tractor we always painted the rims with IH or Rustoleum aluminum spray paint or with a brush out of a quart can Good Luck.

I use the silver argent color from IH. It goes on good and isnt as bright as aluminum. Can be bought in spray cans or quart cans.

My uncle brush painted his work van years ago. Standing next to it or seeing it on the street you wouldn't notice. After he told me I had to look hard to find any brush strokes.

Glenn, I shared your rim paint color information with a friend of mine who does restoration work on Farmall tractor including painting. I know you have a body shop and would be a professional to most of us who do the best we can with our limited skills and talent. I had him use a "high dollar" paint on my rims which he was painting for my Super C tractor I got from another person which I liked very much. It is very similiar to what you noted in your post but is a 1977 Ford code 1G color. I had already selected that color prior to your post but felt you had another good choice other then the typical gray or aluminum most folks use. He asked me what paint you use for the red on the Farmalls you paint as he really liked that high dollar paint he used on my wheels and is thinking about going with a better paint for the red in the future other then just the CaseIH 2150. I told him I would try and get back to you through this post. My email is open if you care to respond in that matter as this thread is getting quite deep now. Thanks for a response in this matter, Hal.
