I acquired this power unit last Dec and restored it this winter. It ran but smoked when I got it. A valve job and new rings got rid of the smoke. Rings on no. 3 piston were stuck and water marks in the bore. The rest of the work was cosmetic. It runs great now. I plan on bringing it to RPRU.

As far as I know the grill is original. It had rust holes in the bottom part that I had to repair. When I got it, it had a screen on the outside, attached with sheet metal screws. I think that was an add on. I've seen a number of U-2 power units like this one and the service manual I have shows exactly like this one. I think the ones with the screen mesh grills may be U-1 units which have the Cub or a Continental engine. The U-2 uses the A engine. I don't know what this one was used for. It has a 6 groove Vee belt pulley on it which is direct drive at engine speed: 1800 RPM. There is an overcenter clutch that has a hand lever. I suspect it was on a water pump, or generator, or something like that. The manual I have shows that angle drives with gear reductions with flat belt pulleys were available. Since it was built in 1944, I doubt it came from a farm application.

The grills without bars were typically on combines and/or balers. This style was typical of the standard configurations. One that was sold as a stand-alone power unit would have been likely to have this grill.
