One of you guys I hope can help me out of a bad situation! I am in the process of trying to disassemble a 100 balanced head drive off of my mower to do repairs .I just purchased mower and my service manual has not gotten here soon enough .The question I have is once you remove cutter bar how do you remove the pin on the bottom side of ballanced head I have tried everything ???????? It is the pin with 1/2" coarse thread set screw in it I have tried to make puller using blocks of steel and a 1/2" grade 8 bolt and still notta !!

Repairing that balanced head is kind of an art in itself. Most dealers have one guy that knows what he is doing or send it out. I would not be the guy to tell you how to do it. Well, it wasn't exactly tractor repair anyway so I was able to avoid them most of the time.

Well Dustin, I haven't ever done it but I can quote chapter and verse from the BR Service Manual for 100 series mowers here on my desk. Looking at the diagram it sounds like you are talking about the Pivot Stud. If so, it should have an allen screw that needs to be removed. After that it says the following:

"Screw an adapter into the pivot stud, and remove the stud, using a slide hammer screwed into the adaptor."

It references an illustration which shows exactly that, with the additional notation "O.T.C. No. 960 Slide Hammer with M-17 Adaptor". If this is not what you are trying to remove just let me know and I will look further. I know nothing of slide hammers but if you look at the picture when you get your manual it doesn't LOOK tough...LOL.

Dave you hit it right on the head I tried a 15lb slide hammer and no movement gettin closer to firing up the hot wrench !!!!

Dave thanks for the info two hours later and one good temper tantrum and it is out !!!!!!!!! used a 1 1/2" socket a 3x5 peice of 3/4" plate with a 1/2"hole drilled in the middle used a grade 8 bolt down through the middle tightened with impact and it did not move ! So now is when I got really ticked and knocked the holy livin crap out of one side of the plate and out it popped .

Dustin, the only thing I can tell you is the slide hammer in the picture is one big sumuvabiotch...looks to be mosta two foot long. That pivot stud goes thru the center of a bearing which is inserted in the balance yoke. If you can save that bearing it might make your life easier down the road. If I were to heat it I would go moderate and use some spray and just keep working on it. Give a yell back if you get her out!

Well...good on ya! Now you need to hang around here because I may need a reminder on how you done it some day! I got a coupla BH mowers here and you never know when I might have to head down that road.

What I didnt tell you guys is I had to do this twice because i am taking parts out of one head and putting in another so double the pain and frustration but both are out and hopefully I will be mowing hay next week !!!

I tried and tried to get the hex bolt out to no avail. Had pb blaster on it every chance I thought of it for 2 weeks, nothing. Broke several hex bits already (4). Took it to my tractor guy and he used acetylene torch on it, nothing. I can"t even get the hex screw out let alone the pivot pin. I am at a total stand still, any help would be appriciated. Thanks John

John I tried and tried and had to slowly drill out the allen head and rethread with tap but start out drilling with a small bit and work your way up I hate to admit but it takes alot of patience !! Any more questions my email is open

I have checked the price on these pivot pins, $32.00-35.00 is there a lower price anywhere? Does anyone have the dimensions of the pivot pin? I have the machine to make the part, I know the price isn't that much, but I save where I can. I'm restoring 2 of these mowers, so I'll need 2 pins.
Thanks

Hey Dave that service manual you have doesn"t mention the demisions of the pivot pin, does it?
Or would you or anyone reading this know the demisions, I can machine the part for my mower just need size....

thanks
Jim
