Ready to paint and wondering what items were not red?? Radator? Starter? Generator? Axles? Carb? Want to make it right and have it look sharp.

Is there a place to get the grill screen new? What color does that go?

Any help would be great. We will have a website up wiht a ton of pictures and a way to get raffle tickets in a week or two.

Consensus look is for starter, radiator, genny, semi flat black. Coil and fan gloss black. Steering wheel spokes red. Coil bracket silver.Shift knob natural rubber black. Throttle lever gloss black, plate red. Install all new cotter pins, and grease zerks for a real detailed look. New stlyle gas cap red, old flat one red for show use.

Gordo

Assemble the tractor, mask off the distributor cap, plug wires, gauges, steering wheel rim, and shift knob, and then paint the tractor red. That's how it was done at the factory

rustyfarmall has it right. they also had a tube that the painter slipped over the axle to keep the paint off of it. remember these were designed to be working farm tractors, not show cars.

Randy and Rusty are correct. Get the grill screen from www.external_link, install and paint with the grill.

I agree with Gordo. Not correct but thats the way I do it. I like the Contrast of the black parts against the red. Like I said, not right but its the way I do it. Bernie Steffen

I was on a lot of Farmalls in the 40s and 50s and NEVER saw any with a gloss BLACK throttle lever.
It seems some ofyou guys have gone loco with Black paint.

I always thought that the only reason the generator and starter were black was because when the farmer repaired or replaced one, the new starter from Delco or whoever it came from painted them black as they didn't know what tractor it was for. If you want it like original nothing was actually painted black by IH. I just had a generator rebuilt at a rebuild place and they painted it black. I painted it red when I painted the rest of the tractor. Each person has their opinion on what looks good. At any tractor show you see all kinds of custom paint jobs, like all the bolt heads painted silver for example. Roger

Red. The only things on the chassis that would not have been totally red would be the glass (gauge faces and light lenses), the electrical connections (VR/ cutout and starter, plug wires), and the rubber on the steering wheel, all of which were masked off, if the steering wheel was even attached as the chassis went thhrough the paint line). The radiator and fan and genny belts were in place but were avoided and started black and were delivered with whatever red overspray got on them while painting the rest red. Only exception I can think of might be with the ignition. Mag bodies were generally coated in lacquer (some sort that had no metallic content to disturb their function????) and I can't say that I ever saw any paint on the cap of either a magneto or a battery ignition distributor, suggesting that they were bolted on after the chassis was painted, so I might add them to the list.

Only black on my '47 BN is the cover on the cutout (a moment of weakness on my part) and the bakelite???? coil and distributor caps on the mag. Only other things that aren't red are the rims on the tires.

I agree with LET ,Never saw a black throttle on a new Farmall M or others of that era. I grew up with those tractors when they were new & drove many of them . oleclint
