SM water pump

Got to looking at the water pump on our SM and noticed the two grease fitting are a little different. One looks normal and the other has extra threads on the outside with a brass cap that goes on it. Whats the story behind this?

Thanks

I think originally both grease zerks had that little brass cap. I'm not real sure why unless IH thought those zerks needed a little more protection from dust? I think I also read somewhere the theory that the caps were there to discourage inexperienced operators from over-greasing the water pump.

If the grease passing through the fitting with the cap is directed to a pressurized area of the pump, the water could push the grease back out of the fitting. The cap prevents this.

Only one of the zerks has outside threads to accomodate a cap. I have seen a few pictures on YT and they show the same thing as I have.

Grease fitting with the cap greases the impeller shaft that has coolant present, one without cap greases the ball bearings that are sealed off from the coolant if seals don't leak. Cap was to keep coolant from leaking out the fitting. Both fittings need no more than a pump or two with a hand grease gun every so often.
One fitting on a SM came with a cap.
