disc openers for 5100 grain drill

I think I need to replace the double disc openers on my 5100 IH grain drill. The operator"s manual says that they are 14 inches diameter. Mine are worn down to 12 inches. Should they be replaced?

Also, are there left and right discs or are they both the same?

Where can I buy these?

Yes they should be replaced. As a general rule if opener disks are worn 3/4 to one inch they should be replaced. There is a left and right hand disk. Shoup has them in their catalog, Shoup dot com. Complete assemblies, hubs, bearings, discs are $28.75 ea. They have good quality products.

Just going by what the Shoup catalog lists. They list a separate Part Number for left and right discs. No experience with IH openers, but don't some use a leading disc set up? Not tru V like Deere uses.

Just looked on their site, can,t find them, how did you locate them?

I believe a 5100 has the same disc openers as a 100, 620, and 6200. Your local CaseIH dealer will either have them in stock or can get them. I just bought 40 of them this Spring. Yes, they should be replaced. No difference in L or R disc, bolts that hold them are LH and RH threads. I have found that jobber blades aren't the same. Different bolts needed and dust caps can be different.

I have their catalog. Some items will not pop up on the online catalog but they are in the paper catalog. Goto the website and punch in GD6031 for left hand disc and GD6032 for right hand disc. Shoup will send you a free catalog, you can request one online.

I checked with the Case-IH dealer and they say both discs are the same (no left or right). I also looked in the shoup catalog and saw the left and right openers (the same ones that you mentioned) that they have for this drill. I guess I am confused again. Which would be better? The shoup catalog says that theirs uses a bigger bearing, and the discs are 11 gage vs. 14 gage for the original equipment discs. Is there an advantage to using the left and right discs? I'm assuming that one is leading and the left and right has to do with the chamfer on the outer edge of the discs?
