christmas tree valve

what is the stud and nut on top for? does it adjust the position of the valve, or does it just adjust the spring tention?

A short, flat piece of steel went to the gas tank mounting stud for support of the valve. If memory serves it was 4-6 inches long.

It centers the valve but you don't really have too many options as to how to position the valve. If you pull the valve spool out you can pretty well see how it functions.

if that adjustment isn't holding the valve centered could that be causing my problem?....THE PROBLEM...when i use the the one way hyd valve on the reservoir under the gas tank, the lever on the christmas tree valve slams forward and pushes the fluid through the pressure relief valve.....THE TRACTOR...is a stageII super m with live hyd. the christmas tree valve is plumed into the pressure hose from the pump with an aftermarket pressure relief valve, then the return side goes to the pressure in side of the reservoir to supply that. basicly i'm running pressure through the christmas tree valve to the reservoir so i can have two seperate hyd. controls. any ideas?

The christmas tree valve is normally plumbed into both the pressure and suction lines with live pump. Pressure comes in the side and suction out the bottom. They inturn are plumbed parallel to rear tank. When using double action cyl,you lock the lever for the rear box and the oil recirculates through the christmas tree valve back to pump when in neutral. When raising imp oil is exposed to relief valve in reservoir. When using single action cyl, you lock the christmas tree valve and release rear lever using it to raise and lower imp again using same relief valve in reservoior. I don't know why you would have a seperate relief valve plumbed into system. Isn't a flow divider for power steering is it. At any rate, if christmas tree valve is not centering it would not hold a loaded double action cyl. Look at the on line parts manual under caseih for a layout of the connections.

You're trying to use the belly pump lever to run one thing, and the christmas tree valve to run something else?

It doesn't work that way.

You need two christmas tree valves, or a second generic spool valve to do that.

no belly pump, live hyd. i'm trying to use the one way hyd on the 3 point hitch and the christmas tree valve for remotes. not nessesaraly at the same time but i do not want to mess with locking levers to use one or the other. it works now but with that lever slaming forward and sending the fluid through the pressure relief valve to feed the reservoir, im afraid the cam key won't be long for this world. am i going to need a aftermarket spool valve to replace that christmas tree valve? i was trying to keep it looking somewhat stock for the pulls, but it is my working tractor.

Just a guess on how you are hooked up. Is the pressure line from the pump feeding the remote control valve dirrect with a relief valve between pump and valve? Where does relief valve dump to? Is return outlet of remote contol valve going to the pressure inlet of the liftall unit?
May be wrong on the guess, but guessing when the pressure builds up on the return outlet of remote control valve when using the liftall it pushes the spool up and then you're dead headed with no place for presure to go but the relief valve.
If you put everything as IH intended for that system as Pete said, both the liftall and the remote control valve will work but not at the same time. Also the one not being used is locked back to use the other, what you don't want.

that is what is happening... thats why i was wondering if the christmas tree valve not being centered exactly is causing it to happen, or it will happen that way regardless of position. if it will happen anyway i'm thinking a check valve on the return side of the christmas tree valve would fix it... do they make one for hydraulics?

The only way that will work is if you put a priority flow valve between the pressure outlet of the pump and the hydraulic reservoir, and run one output to the reservoir and the other to the christmas tree valve.

Doing it that way, you really should install a relief valve between the priority valve and the christmas tree valve too. Otherwise you could blow the christmas tree valve.

If you plumb it the way it's supposed to be plumbed, you're going to get what you're getting now.

The one-way output is supposed to supply the christmas tree valve with pressurized oil. Pull the lever back on the one-way, lock it back, operate the two-way. To use the one-way you MUST disconnect the two-way because they're connected in series.

If plumbed as I guessed a check valve will do no good, whatever pressure you're building up in the liftall when lifting will still be present under the spool valve. May get by with making a strap or rod to hold remote valve in the center when using the liftall.
