A friend was showing me their 20 some farm tractors today. He said one older IH was a model 404. I never heard of that number, has anyone. It did look as old as the numbered series. when did they switch to the 3 digit numbers ? AND did IH make a plain C, or only Super C ? thanks.

3 digit numbers came about in late 1955. The C was followed by the Super C, then the 200/230 in about the same configuration, then the 240 replaced the 230 in a somewhat different configuration. It could be said that the 404 replaced the 240. Engines were the C113 in the C, C123 in the Super C, 200, 230, and 240. Then the C135 in the 404 and a couple of others. The 113/123/135 are the same basic engines with increased bore in the 123 and increased bore and stroke in the 135.

they only made around 2700 row crop (farmall)models they are very rare, but they made 10,000 + 404 international (utility)tractors, they were on the similar design as the 460 / 560 sheet metal, I own a 404 farmall & 504 farmall 36 & 46 pto hpwr, they were also made during the 06 series line up 04 series was 61 - 68

i have a farmall 404 rowcrop, and a international 2404, witch is the industrieal version of the 404 utility. i've seen a few of them in my area (southeast michigan) they were a fairly popular tractor. they were also the 3rd generation in the C family. 1,C-Super C, 2, 200, 230, 240, 3, 404 rowcrop and utility.

My late uncle had a 1961 404 that was originally a front end loader with a (3pt)rear grading blade. Red/White with a narrow front. He bought it around 1972 with the loader and blade removed and the engine rebuilt. he used it for plowing, discing and hauling tobacco to the barn.
