I have a later model cub that I use for mowing. It runs strong and has good oil pressure even when hot,but it smokes a light haze of blue smoke.Should I keep running it until the pressure gets low or the engine gets weak?Should I go for a complete rebuild now?How about just re ringing the pistons?

The cub has no sleeves, so the only way to repair (correctly) is to bore and use oversize pistons.
If the bore wear just under the ridge measures less than .005" on the diameter, I might consider a set of pistons and rings, But even then I would need to think on it.
If it is not fouling plugs, I would probably run it. Jim

It doesnt foul plugs. It seems to have a lot of blowby coming out of the oil fill tube and does smoke a light blue haze from the exhaust.I hate to fix things that arent broken.

The smoke from the oil fill tube is normal, and the blue smoke your seeing is probably from unleaded gas. Mine has been rebuilt and it does the exact same thing, in fact, pretty much all of my tractors do the same thing.

Maybe its just normal then. The oil pressure is good and the engine is strong no fouling plugs.I did a compression check years ago and all cylinders were good.

As you said if it isn't broke don't fix it. Ya if you use a QT. of oil every hour or so you need to do something to it but if you get 10 plus hours from a QT. of oil run it. Oh and if you are running a multi weight oil you might switch to say a 30W or 40W for the summer and slow down the smoke but that might get you more mosquito

I mow for about four hours and use about half a quart or so.Thanks for the advice.I will let it go for now.Anything to kill those darn skeeters.

I own a 54 and a 55 and they don't smoke!

You could always rering the pistons that are in it. Just run the barry hone threw it a few times and put it back together.

I have always pulled them and gone threw them complete but i know of several that were just reringed and run great.

Does it use alot of oil ? Maybe a little thicker oil or one of those fixes in a bottle might take care of it.

Smoke from the oil fill tube is nothing to be overly concerned with, but that smoke DOES indicate the compression rings are worn out, and the blue smoke from the exhaust indicates worn out oil control rings. Unleaded gas does not make blue smoke. Too much unleaded gas, or ANY gas for that matter will make black smoke if too much is fed in.

I have a 154 Loboy that #1 was bought new by my negihbor, #2 was rebuilt 2 years ago, and has had smoke come out of the breather pipe since day 1, also have a Cub that does the exact same thing, especially if its working hard. If you look at the smoke from the exaust any direction, it can, and does to me, look dark blue. Too much is a problem, but a little bit of smoke from this unleaded fuel has been discussed here before, and that was the general consensus among those here as well.

A common problem on the Cubs is the small tube from the block to the breather gets plugged. I would make sure that's open first. A lot of times it gets overlooked on a rebuild.

Well it could be as simple as the air cleaner needs a good oil change and the tube up through the middle cleaned out or the valve guides and seals can be woren a bit to cause blue smoke
