Farmall H Grille question

You guys helped me figure out that the grille on my '42 H has been replaced at some point with an early grille and rad. It has the Duetz connectors on it.

So, my grille is rough, and looking to replace it (I also know the rad will have to be replaced also). I have found some grille's that have a round rad cap hole, and some that have the slot at the rear. I know that one takes the round rad cap, and the other take the cap with the "wing" on it.

Can anyone tell me what year the cutover was from the round to the "winged" rad caps? I am guessing that the '42 was just a round hole.

The non-pressurized radiators with the Dzus fasteners to attach the grill ALL use the round radiator cap. Incidently, that round cap WILL interchange with the fuel tank cap.

The later, pressurized radiators ALL use the "winged" cap.

115030,mid-late 1942. The parts section of www.caseih.com has all the info as to serial breaks.

The Parts Catalog shows 3 part numbers for the radiator cap. One was used S/N 501 to 115029, the other 2 S/N 115030 up. I presume that is the serial number break where the radiator was pressurized. The notch gives overflow pipe clearance, so was probably added with the cap change.

The 2 pressure caps are interchangeable. One is a D number and the other is an R number. I suppose one could have the wing and the other not, but that would be speculation (and counter to what rustyfarmall said). I don't know one way or the other on that question.

I see that CNKS posted while I was adding this comment. It really would be helpful for you to crack the parts book open yourself. You might find your own answer and including what you find there with your questions would help clarify your questions. It would save everyone who is trying to help you from repeating the leg work you can do for yourself. Might help people understand what your actual question is as well.

thanks guys. My serial number is 100743, so looks like I will need the non-pressurized rad and grille to be correct.

Thanks to all who answered.

Jim, you are absolutely correct in your comments about "reading the manual". I am out of town on business, and was surfing the web for parts from the hotel room. I usually do read up first, but my manuals are at home.............
