ive been hunting me a farmall cub or a A, to make a mowing tractor for several years, well today i got me one, 1947 cub, came with front grader blade and rear plow and all the manuels it had when delivered in 1947, now the tractor is box stock original, including the electrical system, which means 6-v positive ground, i need a battery, now if i go buy the battery tommorrow, it will be charged for a 6v negetive ground system, so how do i make it work on this cub, when i removed the old battery [ tractor has been stored for a long time] the ground cable was on the pos post of the old battery i know this has been discused before, but i cant find it, which post should i hook the tractors hot cable to on the new battery or what do i need to do?

The battery is just "charged". Charge the battery at home for a short time so you can get maximum life out of it. Put the new 6 volt in the battery box, put the - cable on the - terminal and then the + cable on the + terminal. Be sure all terminals & cables are clean.

Hook your new battery up with positive to ground, just like the old one. It's easy to overthink these things.

You need to connect your ground cable on the + battery post and connect the battery cable to your starter to the minus - battery terminal & connect this cable first before connecting the ground. Hal

thanks very much guys, it looks like im making
a problem where there isnt one, one other question then, when reading the original owners manuel, which came with the unit when new, it says to use 10w oil to lube several of the oil cups and the lub points on the tractor, what are you guys using for 10 w today? planing on doing all that today as well as changing the fluid in all the gear boxes ect today

If it's the intermittent lube on the magneto, I usually give it just a short sip of 3in1, or light gun or sewing machine oil.

transmission holds 3 1/2 PINTS.
probably has water in there
pans under the bull gear just fill them less than half fuill and reinstall. change the oil in the air cleaner cup using whatever oil you use in the motor. remove the tube between the air cleaner and the block, clean it good and reinstall. adjust the valves. dump half a can of Seafoam in the crankcase the other half in the gas tank
good luck
Ron

I agree it is easy to overthink these things. I fixed up and H for my son who is a college graduate (in chemistry which doesn't help for electrical things). I think every time he hooks up the battery charger to his tractor he calls me to make sure which terminal to connect to. Roger

lol, how did you know? yes it had water, all drained and flushed and refilled now, will post pics in a little while, got to get them loaded

SAE 10 oil is still available today. It's just straight grade motor oil. I know your local CaseIH dealer has it because it's used in older tractor engines during the winter months. You may not be able to find it at Walmart or the local Kragen, Shuck's, or Pep Boys because they cater to cars, which use multi-viscosity oils.

However, normally people use Hy-Tran for the hydraulics instead of SAE 10 oil these days.

The rear end uses SAE 90 gear oil, but any of the multi-viscosities will work just as well.
