oil pressure on a farmall m ? old motor had about 50 lbs , putting a new motor in , only has about 3 - 4 lbs at idle and 20 lbs at 1950 rpm , need to know what the proper pressure should be ? called a pilling friend of mine who just spent alot of money on a stroker engine and he said his new motor was 5 at idle and 20 at 2000 rpms ?
need some feed back , thanks

Simple things first. The oi filter has an orfice in the retaining bolt. Did you install a different kind of filter or something. As it is a bypass type filter, meaning oil is just metered right off the oil gallery and then to dump from filter this can affect oil pressure. Second, oil pump, condition and clearance of end plate on pump, next proper relief valve and spring in pump. Some relief valves were inadverdently used that had a step on end but M should not have it. Pressue should be 65 to 70 psi at high idle and hold 30 or 40 psi at low idle. If these things check out you may need to pressurize gallery with pan off and check where oil is going. Cam bearing, main bearing etc.

(quoted from post at 10:32:59 05/08/10) no old motor was fime , new motor is the problem - probally going to swicth out the pumpd

Yes, definitely install the old pump on that new engine.

AND.... the original oil filter retaining bolt.

With 50# oil pressure why did you change engines and what do you mean by a "new" engine? Fresh overhaul? Do you have the paper work on what work was done to "new" engine? Was it done in a shop? Is "new" engine guarenteed and I can think of more questions. Lots of questions. Need more information on history and defination of "new" engine. Armand

How about some more information. Is this a stroker engine? Any clearance grinding on the inside of block? Any changes to the oil passage routes?
