W9 oil leak

I posted about this the other day but I still have a question. On my 9 right behind the oil pan under the flywheel is where the oil is coming out, and there is a 1/2" gap between the motor and I guess you could it the bell housing. I looked on another 9 and it had what appearded to be some time of gasket or seal material in the gap. Maybe this is what M Diesel was refering to in his post. Can this gasket or materil be installed from the outside.I know this is not going to fix the rear main seal if that is where it is leaking but they had the material in there for some reason. Thanks for any help or prior experience along these lines.

I think you're referring to the little flap thingie? It can go on/off after if it works as I think. The ones I have seen are made of a fiber material attached to a metal piece, but they weren't on a 9 specifically. It looks like the 9 rear seal assembly is made the same though.

The seal pieces I referred to are a pair of half circle felt strips that kinda look like a french fry bent into a half moon. They fit into a groove in the seal proper. They creep with time, getting scrunched up a bit and leaving a gap between them.
