wiring on M

I have an old M I use occasionally so I keep the Neg Batt cable off when not in use. The other day I hook up the cable and it sparks like it is drawing a load, when I climb up in the seat wires are smoking. So thought wires were worn and I replaced them. Still have the same problem the wire to the coil from the ammeter is smokin hot. Any suggestions?

Below I will put a link to diagrams.
DO this:
Between the battery cable that is now off of its terminal, and the terminal it came off of, connect a light bulb (it should be the same voltage as the battery, and be bright enough to see well. An 1154 6v or 1156 12 v will work, and a socket is easy to find at a parts store. This lamp will now light, and the wires will not smoke. Now disconnect one wire at a time from the system (starting with the connection at the amp meter not connected to the starter switch). If the lamp goes out, that wire is shorted to ground. Re attach all wires as you check them. Focus on the one that allows the light to go out.
If it attaches to other things, keep following the wire or connection till it ends and that (or a internal short to ground where it has rubbed into metal) is the problem. Jim

Thanks for the tip on making a diagnostic light. I found the problem and fixed it in under two minutes, it took longer to put the light together. Didn't get a chancce till yesterday to work on it because of the weather. Once again You all haved saved me time and money. Thanks Vince
