Bull Pinion Cage Shims and 4th/5th Gear

Well... I'm in deep with my H, so I may as well keep going! I understand why the pinion cage shims are used (ring and pinion alignment), question is how many and what thickness (CIH parts page shows light, medium and heavy). Currently there are three shims on either side. Could it be one of each? Seems more that ironic that the parts website would have the same amount pictured that I have on my tractor. Before I realized there are two threaded holes used to press the cage assembly out, I was prying with a flat head screwdriver and mangled them.

Also, where can I get a good used 4th/5th gear? Mine don't look so good! Everything else looks fine, considering the age. Still, all bearings and seals are being replaced. Kinda expensive, but she's worth it. I'm having a ball, working on 'er, not to mention, so far just one smashed thumb (I taught that darn thumb a thing or two)! Thanks Kevin

Any old tractor salvage yard in the country should have a dozen or so of the gears you need in stock. The H was the most common Farmall model, ever. Just look in the yellow pages.

try mike at steel wheel ranch, or bates corporation for the gears. as far as the shims, you will need to see what clearance you need, then add or subtract shims accordingly.

Far as shims, use same amount of total thickness as you took out as you do not want to change the mesh of worn in gears even if they seem loose as heck or you will have one noisey rear end.
