SA Steering repair confusion

Have read archives, I think I know what to do when I take everything apart but I have read that "remove the big plug, remove nut and steering shaft will come out by turning clockwise and removein steering wheel." I removed the plug, couldn't figure how they got the cotter pin in the nut but turned the shaft and it all came out, shaft nut bearing and all, is it supposed to do that without the nut removed?

Yes, the whole assembly (shaft, bearing and nut) is kept in place by the plug only. Now, you can remove the castle nut and the ball bearing from the shaft. Replace ball bearing if worn. Also look at bushing (if there is one, cannot remember) and oil seal in the housing.

I plan to take it apart this fall and yes, I need bushings and seals as oil comes out around steering shaft. Hopefully just a worn key but have my doubts, although I have had a run of good luck lately. Previous owner rebuilt front end from the spindles to the steering sector but stopped at the bottom bearing.
