Hello all. I"m new here and have a pretty simple (I hope) question that I"m looking for some help with. I recently bought an IH 300 Utility tractor with power steering. The tractor does not have a T/A. I need to replace the trans oil and the rear pump/power steering oil. When I look in the manual it says that I need some IH Hydro Touch oil (or something like that, I don"t have it in front of me right now). I"m assuming that there is some newer oil that is the equivalent. Can someone tell me what kind/weight of oil I should use for these jobs? Thanks.

For the hydraulic chamber you can use hytran oil or hydraulic oil. A lot of tractors can use hytran oil in the transmission but on my 300u the axle seals leak pretty bad with that thin of an oil. I'd suggest using around an 80 weight transmission oil for the tranny. I don't have power steering but would think it is hooked to the hydraulic oil tank.

Thanks for the info. The power steering is hooked into the hydraulic oil tank under the seat. So for the hydraulic oil, does it make a difference one way or the other whether I use normal hydraulic oil or hytran oil? Do you happen to know what was so special about that IH Hydro Touch oil that the manual recommends? Is that just their own brand or was there actually something special about that oil?

Also, something else I just thought of. I'm having a hard time locating the drain plug for the hydraulic tank under the seat. Can you describe where that is located? It looks like the plug is on the side, but that doesn't look like it's low enough to drain the oil all the way. Thanks.

If it has no TA from the factory (TA delete) it could use hydraulic oil in the system, and gear oil (80-90 viscosity) in the trans and rear drive train.
If it has a non working TA I would use the Hy-tran type oil. (or its equal from other stores) it should be equal to Hy-tran, or John Deere hydraulic transmission fluid. Regular hydraulic oil in not rated for the pressure found in gear drive systems (between the teeth of the gears) and will be a bad experiment. The manual will call for the Hy-trans, but If no TA it is not needed in the trans and will save some bucks.

Ben:

Facing the left side of the tractor, starting at the center of the brake drum, measure 9 inches along a line running toward the front of the tractor but 45 degrees up from horizontal. If yours is like mine, you'll have a square-headed plug there.

The drain plug for the power steering and hydraulics is on the left side when sitting on the tractor (mine had a pipe plug). The plug is closer to the top of the casting as this reservoir is above the rear end reservoir.
On the hydraulic fluid issue, a word of caution. I am in northern MN and it gets quite cold, one winter day a couple years ago the fluid crushed the screen in the reservoir (either due to ice crystals or thick fluid). The screen is expensive and not real easy to get at. Since then, I use winter grade hyd fluid from my Cenex dealer in the winter time. I also made a heater from a car head bolt heater that turns into the fill hole that I use when it gets really cold.

Thanks to all for your help. I'll take your advice and see if I can get this done w/o messing anything up!
