766 steering wheel removal

I purchased a new steering wheel for my 766 restoration project. Does anyone have any advice on an easy way to get the old one off? What size is the steering wheel shaft? Thanks Kent
 
I took the nut off mine and soaked it with penetrating oil and let it set. Then I still had to heat the steering wheel base a little bit. If you do have to do that I would put the seal kit in the steering motor while I was there so I knew it was good and for fear of burning out the seals. I think a steering wheel puller will get them off in some cases but I know it wouldnt get the one before last off and I havent replaced it yet. Hope this helps.
 
I think those all used a tapered shaft. Put a puller on it, soak it with wd, and a little heat from a mapp/propane gas torch will pop it off right into your lap. When it pops loose, it comes right at ya. Just keep the puller tite and it will come off eventually during cycles of heat and no heat. I would assume the shaft size is the same as the hole in your new steering wheel if you bought the right one.
 
Try without heat first. It may surprise you.

We had to remove the steering wheel on the 756, which is the same design, to replace that upper seal. It hadn't been off there in 25-30 years, but it popped right off with a little pressure from the makeshift steering wheel puller we used (just a piece of flat strap with 3 holes in it).
 
Here s what worked for me several yrs ago. Loosened the nut several turns , then soaked the steering wheel with Kyroil Pee oil often for 6 months while using the tractor. Turned the nut back to " finger tight " & left the plastic cap off , to keep an eye on the nut so it did not come off. seemed to me that using it daily helped to work it loose. The wheel came off with out heat . oleclint
 
The best puller I have found is a home made one. Just a stout piece of iron about half inch thick, just long enough and wide enough to fit inside wheel cap area, couple of fine threaded bolts and a bunch of washers.Drill holes in iron to span the bolt holes in wheeel. Install bolts till full thread, then back off a turn or so and add enough washers to fill the gap between bolt head and iron , tighten them down gingerly and maybe a light tap on end. Loosen nut but leave it on . Never like to heat them.
