ih Plow Colter

I have a couple of colters and the hub seems to be froze. Is there a bearing in there or does it just ride on that hub? Any good ideas how to free them up? Thanks Paul

Taking it apart is really the only way. Depending on what changes wewe made in its lifetime, many were replaced. Many have bushings, some are just greasy steel on steel, and othere are roller or tapered roller bearings. Jim

the only way to take it apart is to cut the rivits and not sure I want to do that unless I have too. I might just try some penatrateing oil and see what happens...Thanks Paul

If it is riveted, it is likely steel on steel. I would also not cut it apart. If it is rusted tight it still has somewhat close fit to the shaft. Jim

I"ve found that a couple swings of the hammer usually frees them up enough to work some grease into them. I buy half a dozen old pull type plows a year for resale. Never had to take one apart yet.

If you can squirt some wd40 orsuch in there and leave it for a few minutes. Then try turning it back and forth. It might take a while but they usually will come loose.

Try putting some heat on it. If you can get it freed up and have the space to drill & tap 1/4-28
threads and install a zerk fitting. Then you could give it a shot of grease once in awhile.
I did this to the Troy Bilt tillers so they slide up and down on those posts when engaging or disengaging the tines & wheels. Hal
