M vs Super M Block

Yes and no. The engine is identical, the clutch and flywheel are smaller in the M and not compatible. Using the M's FW and a heavy duty clutch plate (maybe from HiCapacity company) will make it work. Jim
 
I am a little confused. You say the M clutch and flywheel are smaller and will not work on the SM engine. Then you say to use the M flywheel and a different clutch disk and it will work.

So will the M flywheel work on SM engine? If the flywheel works why does the clutch disk not work? Getting an aftermarket clutch is not a problem, just curious as to if I am understanding you correctly.

The M Flywheel will bolt on the SM crank. The blocks are interchangeable. The M clutch is a little less grippy than it needs to be for a SM engine. Thus the better clutch (to fit an M FW) Jim
 
Thanks for the info. The clutch was going to upgraded anyways, so that will not be a problem. Appreciate the info.
 
The M uses an 11 inch clutch and the Super M a 12 inch clutch. As long as the clutch matches the flywheel it will all fit either way.
 
I was under the impression there was a potential interference with the Liftall in an M if the SM clutch/FW were used. Just remembering as best I can. Jim
 
Super M flyweel and clutch will NOT clear the top of the Liftall unit in the M. Early Super M Liftall has a depression in the top of the Liftall casting that clears the larger clutch.
 
Thanks for the info. Another piece of knowledge to store away for the future. Since I will not be running a Liftall, then I can use the Super M clutch and flywheel.
 
Yes late M and SM with the transmission driven liftall used a main hydraulic or reservoir housing with a change from previous housings. Late housings have a casting # that ends with the suffix letters EE. Change in housings was to prepare for 12 inch clutches that they started putting in M tractors and carried on to SM.
