Sudden new transmission noise on Farmall 200

Sounds like a bolt has backed out of the clutch and is rubbing against gear teeth. Loud vibration/knocking noise when in gear and clutch is out. Tractor moves but it does not sound like a good idea. Quiet when in neutral. Years ago a bolt did back out of the clutch and it would not release (or so I was told). I suspect I will need to have it loaded on a trailer and taken into a shop, have the case split, etc. That kind of repair is beyond my skills/tools/time. Is that worth it on a '56 200, which is worth only $1,500 max anyway? I could buy, for instance a 1975 Farmall 574 for $6,600 with a bunch of accessories - seeder, bush hog, rear blade, front bucket. I could use the extra hp as well. Is that a good model? The 200 is the only tractor I have used.

I agree. What would it cost to get someone to fix it though? I know it would need to be picked up. That is at least $100 right there.

At least $100.

Totally guessing, it may have had a bearing come apart and broke a few teeth on two or more gears. The bearing is cheap but the gears can be $100 to $200 each, so with labor $300 to $1,000 is not out of reason. BUT you don't really know what is wrong until you have someone experienced look at it, and probably still have to take it apart to really know. You can see a little through the oil fill hole in the transmission cover, and if someone has a camera on a wire they can look inside pretty good. Chances are pretty slim from your description that it is only a bearing but it may be. That would be a $25 part and maybe $150 labor. A top bearing can lose balls into the gear teeth which then breaks them, while a bottom bearing will sound pretty rough but not do much damage.

There are lots of guys who would jump at the chance to buy it and fix it if they could buy it cheap enough. If you don't have a friend who wants to fix it for you, and you don't want to try, you may need to trade it off. They are not hard to fix but you have to want to try. No real special tools are required...

It could be the drive yolk in front of the tranny and after the clutch. Cheap to fix. It does require a split though. If you are interested in a bigger tractor, maybe you can donate it to an FFA or 4H group and get a tax document! Jim

Drain the oil out first and see what comes out, if its a gear you will see chunks of teeth and if a bearing just came out you might mind the balls out of the bearing

I did that. Nothing metal came out, just oil and sludge. It does not sound like something is grinding the gears, but more like something is hitting a rotating part. It speeds up and slows down with the engine, does not make any noise when in neutral. It only happens when in gear and I let out the clutch. Once it starts, it does not go away when I push in the clutch. It quiets down only when I shift back to neutral.
