W4 engine issues

I'm having issues with a W4. It was barely able to run when i got it. Complete tune-up, Carb kit and it ran great except for a brief stumble when throttle advanced open quickly. Now it runs well idling, but stumbles, barks fire out the muffler at high end throttle. Thought spark at plugs was weak, changed the coil. Now stronger spark, but no better performance. Spark at the points seems eratic and much of it seems to flash behind the points somewhere. Is it possible that the points are defective and causing poor performance at speed? Changed the manifold and no difference. Carb cleaned and checked by a shop twice.
This is long winded, but more info is better I always say.
This tractor is going to turn my hair white.
Any input would be greatly appreciated

My first thought was that you still have a fuel delivery issue, but I also think that quite possibly the distributor is in need of a total rebuild. Not just points and condensor, but a full rebuild. New shaft, bushings, and advance springs and weights.

That's what I'm thinking too... The bushings in the distributor are wore badly and the shaft is all over the place in there. You should be able to tell by simply trying to wiggle the shaft with the cap and rotor removed.

Thanks guys, I never thought to check the distrib. shaft for lateral movement. Talking to another mechanic this morning and he said that I'd put in the cheap points and they're lucky to last 6 months.

good idea to adjust the valve clearance also. as the valve train wears the clearance decreases , you could be running with tight valves.
