amp gauge on my 300U

I put a new amp gauge on my 300U after my old one died. At the same time I put on a new neg battery cable (12 volt generator, neg ground) and cleaned the ground to the tractor real well. Made sure I polarize the system. When I started the tractor the amp gauge went nuts with wild swings from + to -. I thought maybe the regulator was bad but a new one didn't change anything. Now after only a few weeks I see corrosion inside of the amp gauge. Did I get a bad gauge or is something else going on.I've had the system set up for 12 volts for a long time and worked fine until the amp gauge froze up last year from sitting outside.

I would say the gauge was bad. A less expensive gauge will have little or no dampening internally. This is OK for alternators, but really not good for electrically noisy Generator and Voltage regulator systems. Corrosion inside means it is getting water in it. A Stewart Warner gauge would be good (check the website for SW.) Jim
