Super A Electric Problem

When I hook the wire from the ammmeter to the starter motor on the Super A in accordance with the operators manual I just get smoke. What am I doing wrong and how do I fix?

The wire from the starter switch (on the starter) to the amp meter supplies all of the electrical system with battery power. If it is getting hot/smoking, there is a short to ground in the system.
(assuming it has a 6v generator, and a voltage regulator, and lights)
Look at the amp meter while brushing the smoke making wire on the switch terminal (very momentary contact) If the amp gauge dips to way discharge, the short is down stream from the amp gauge. Assuming it does not dip there is a easy to find short to ground in the wire going to the gauge.
If down stream, the next step is to remove the Bat wire from the Voltage regulator, and make sure it touches nothing while disconnected.
Now brush the smoke wire on the switch while watching the amp gauge. If it does not dip, the issue is in the VR, or generator. if it does go discharge as it has, the short is in the electrical box, or the wire going to the VR bat terminal. Something in the box is grounded to the box. (assumes the light switch is off).
If it stopped discharging, the problem is now clearly in the VR and Generator.
Now take off the ARM connection to the gen from the VR. and reattach the BAT terminal tyhat was removed last trial.
Now try the brushing the wire at the starter again.
If it does not discharge, the problem is that the cutout relay inside the VR is stuck closed. New VR time unless you are electronically good.
If it still discharges, the VR is shorted inside.
There is no connection in the VR between the F terminal and the BAT or ARM terminal.
so they are not discussed as an issue.

Thank you for the response. I won't be able to check it out for a few days because I have a lot field work to do.

When I tried swiping the wire on the amp meter I just got very little movement in the gauge. I took my generator and voltage regulator to a shop to check it out. The voltage regulator was "toast". However, now I re-installed the generator and voltage regulator I still don't have any charging when I run the tractor but I don't have any spark when I swipe the wire on the amp meter either. Now what? I don't know alot about a tractor electrical system.
