Steering help

I mentioned before that I have a half turn of play in the steering on my 1939 A. Today the steering box comes off.

How do I get the steering shaft out of the box? The manual says it comes out through the front. I have the end nut off, but all I can see is the ball bearing race.

How do I get the lower section off the steering box? I have all the bolts out, but is it just stuck?

And when I finally get in there, how do I know what needs fixing? I have never handled a steering problem before?

And if someone wants to be my mentor on this project, let me know.

Thanks.

The shaft should turn out of the bottom, (steering wheel off) Pushing the bearing as it screws out. Don't force things, there may be more bolts. Look up the diagrams in the on line materials caseih.com.
Identification of primary issues should be already done based on observation of loose locations. (prior post) Jim

The pitman arm has to come off before the lower half of the casting can come off... Need to remove the front axle also... It is often easier to support the tractor under the bellhousing on a jack stand and pull the whole front end off.

Once the steering shaft is out, the axle off and the pitman arm off you can unbolt it and work it apart. There are 2 locating dowels.

Once in there there isn't much. The bushing in the casting you removed... Sector gear is keyed to the shaft and has a bearing on it which is held in the upper casting by a retainer held in place with 3 bolts.

Thanks for the reply. I got it all off the tractor today. And I have
someone who is going to help me get it all apart tomorrow. Two
heads are often better than one!

Did you have to do any work to get the steering back to somewhere
near normal?

Upper bearing on the sector shaft was junk on mine which resulted in vertical thrust of the sector gear and shaft... when you would turn the steering wheel the sector gear shaft would move vertically and you'd see it in the pitman arm before it would begin to turn the wheels...

OK. Well, on mine, the steering wheel moves from 9 o'clock to 3
o'clock before anything does anything!! I think tomorrow I'll find
one or both gears are well worn. Wenger's of Myerstown has used
gears and shafts and that's all I have found so far. One place does
have a new gear for about $160.00. A little steep I think. But we'll
see.

I'll keep all informed in my progress (or lack of it))!!
