Does my 140's transission need to be rebuilt?

When I changed the oil in the transmission of the Farmall 140 I got in February it looked like it had never been changed.

I noticed a lot of noise in fourth gear from the transmission the other day when I was on the road also I have a fair amount of noise in reverse gear but the rest of the gears sound fine.

I have a couple questions,
# 1 How much noise is too much? # 2 What would need replacing? # 3 Where would I get the parts.

Thanks

140,s have always had a whine in 4th gear and reverse when brand new ! .As long as it does not sound like grinding metal you are fine . Keep fluids checked and work it .IMHO

They made noise when new so thats not unusual. Sometimes changing the input bearing on the main shaft will quiet the noise some.

What did you put in the transmission for lube? The manual says HyTran, but the transmission is basically the same as a Super A, and there are no hydraulics using it as a reservoir. You should be able to use heavy gear lube which will quiet the noise somewhat.

If all the gears work and the noise is only a whine, I think you would be wasting a lot of money and work to rebuild the transmission. It might still make the same noises, as some noise is normal with these. It's rare for these transmissions to give much trouble. Most common problem is the oil slinger gear which will cause a lot of noise, but not much harm. To replace the oil slinger, you have to completely take everything apart.

I don't know how much difference there is in a 140 and Super C or 240U tranny, but Dad bought a Super C new in the mid '50s and I have a 240U and both have some "whine" in 4th gear. Seems I also recall that in a couple of Cs Dad had.

To answer your question The old oil looked like green mud.
I put high tran in it and ran it for about an hour then drained it and put in 80-90 weight oil.

When I drained the high tran it looked dirty too. Hopefully the high tran wash cleaned things up.
