Carb Solenoid

I purchased a used carb for my IH 504, it came with a fuel solenoid and the connecting wire is bare coming out of the solenoid. My old carb does not have a fuel solenoid or connecting wire, can I cut the tip of the solenoid and not use the connecting wire and leave it in-active?

If the solenoid is working DON'T wreck it! Guys who need them pay "big bucks" for one.

It has benefits, as well. Simply run a wire from the switch side of the ignition resistor (if used) to the solenoid.

A few possibilities:

1 - Wire the solenoid to the IGN terminal on the ignition switch. Or wire it to the switch side - not the coil side(!) - of the ballast resistor.

2 - Depending on the carburetor you may be able to swap the solenoid for a standard mixture adjustment needle. But don't throw away the solenoid - likely someone out there will want it!

3 - Also depending on the carburetor you MAY be able to back out the solenoid 4 - 5 turns and run the tractor with the solenoid inoperative. (I did this successfully on a friend's 3020 with a Marvel carb a few years ago).

Carefully center the wire where it comes out of the solenoid then secure it in place with a gob of RTV silicone.

Once the silicone cures slip a suitable insulating tube over the bare pigtail. A piece of insulation stripped from a 14 ga or so wire should do the job.
