I sent off my govener case to have bushings pressed in. As long as the tractor is down, I thought I would tackle an oil leak between the head and block. Don"t have any idea on torque to reinstall, or problems I might run into! Which manuals or videos would you suggest. I don"t even have an owners manual right now, but there sure seems to be an expensive array of aftermarket manuals!

Get the parts, service and operators manuals from www.external_link. That will cover most of what you will ever want to do. As to the head, remove it, clean off the old gasket being careful to keep the gasket material, dirt, etc out of the engine. Install new gasket, use copper coat on both sides, torque to 80 ft lbs, not 65 as the manual will say--the spec was upgraded by IH. Torque in the sequence noted in the service manual (I believe it is circular) beginning in the middle in 20 lb or so increments. Set the valve clearance, run a couple of hours, retorque and reset the valve clearance. Clearance is 0.014 with the engine hot, cold about 0.016.

i got my manuals from here (yesterdays tractors) wont heart to support them since they provide this forum so you can get free advise. good luck, d. coleman

CNKS - Wouldn't it not hurt to get the head trued up at the machine shop? My buddy just had his magnufluxed and trued up and it was only $90. Just a thought.

I don't cover every possibility in my answers as I don't type 200 words/minute. I simply answered his question. But, I would call head warpage rather unusual. I did have one C head trued because some idiot had deeply scratched the surface with a screwdriver removing it.

Is there any easy way to tell if you need to get the head trued when you get it off there? I have a 45' AV that I am restoring and I want to replace the head, valve, and oil pan gaskets among others.

But with the head gasket I was wondering if you can just remove the head, clean everything up, put on the new gasket and torque down or if you have to get the head trued up at a machine shop just because you removed it.

Also, does anyone know if it is possible to remove the head by yourself of if it would be handy to have someone else there to lift it off with you. Sorry for all the questions but this is my first time restoring a tractor and I'm going at it on my own with help and advice from people I know and this forum.

Jim responded separately, but I agree, easy enough to check for yourself. However, with that said, remember a couple of things. These engines are relatively low compression, low RPM engines. The heads are fairly heavy cast iron.

Unless the engine was over heated, or totally torqued wrong, there will unlikely be warpage. I have not found a warped head yet on a letter or F series engine. rusted? yes. scratched because some dufus used a pick-axe to remove the old gasket? yes. Warped? no.

If you are not going to turn this into a "high performance" pulling machine, save yourself some money, and do as Jim suggested.

IMHO.
