Farmall 460 Shifter

Hi, all! My 1959 Farmall 460 gas is stuck in 4th gear. The lower end of the shifter is worn out. I need to know if a new shifter for a Farmall M would work properly in my 460? As I understand both tractors have the same transmission, I"d like to go to the straight shifter lever and not use the long curved lever as it hits my knees in 3rd gear. Is the lower end the same on the shifters? Thanks for any help in advance! Don

I can't answer your question, but the 460 transmission is similar to the H-350 trans, the 560 trans is similar to the M-450 trans.

Regular M shifter won't work, the piviot point to the end of shifter that goes in shift forks is shorter. If wanted a 460 type shifter could be made shorter and bent to any place wanted if you could shift and clear everything. If you want to do some bending a shifter from a 300 to 560 and some others can be used unless my memory is off. Some bolt on shifter and shift towers that have a lower piviot point can be found and made to work. For the same upper length shifters and the same transmission a lower piviot point means the top of shifter moves more with less resistance, compared to a higher piviot point that takes more pressure to move shifter but top end moves a shorter distance. On the 460 type IH made the shifter longer above the higher piviot point to overcome the leverage lost. That wasn't the only reason for the shifter design though.
