I looked at a 300 row crop yesterday that has potential. Not only was the TA out but the PTO didn't work either. Seller said he and neighbor removed the unit looking for an easy fix,but were unsuccessful so just re-installed it. What may be wrong and how many dollars to fix? Don't need the TA but must have the PTO! May have heard some noise from within the bellhousing which did not appear to be coming from the motor?

In other words, they blindly pulled the PTO, didn't understand what they were looking at, and TRIED to put it back. Maybe successfully, maybe not.

Noise could be anything, but with the PTO out my first suspicion is that the splines on the IPTO drive gear have stripped out of the pressure plate. That would cause some grinding noise in the bell housing and prevent the PTO from working.

Unless you can get it cheap, walk away. It needs to be split at the very least.

The PTO may be disconnected. Underneath the tractor is a seasonal disconnect. I believe you have to loosen (or remove, been too long to remember) a bolt that holds the "lever" in place. The other option is that the drive gear for the PTO shaft may be removed (although very unlikely). This is not too bad to put in if you find the replacement.

As far as the TA goes, the tractor will need to be split into 3 pieces to replace or overhaul the unit.
