H Ammeter Hookup

I finally got my H running. Starts every time on gas with no need for ether. Now on to the next problem...the charging circuit.

I have a 3 terminal regulator...FLD, ARM and BAT. I jumpered FLD and BAT to polarize the generator. When I run the engine, the ammeter indicates a very strong discharge. In fact it pegs the needle to the left. I have it wired according to Bob M's diagram.

What steps should I take to make sure I have the charging circuit working?

Just on my first cup of coffee and not really awake yet.......

Have you got that battery stuffed in there right? Hooked up with a positive ground?

If you inteded to change it over to a negative ground system, you'll have to reverse all the connections on the back of the ammeter to make it function in the proper direction.

Which terminal of the battery is connected to the frame of the tractor?

Bob M's diagram is for POS ground like Allan said. If you connected the NEG battery terminal to ground out of habit, that's why the ammeter is reading backwards. You can leave it that way, just swap the wires on the ammeter.

It sounds like it's charging, ammeter wired up, backwards, but it shouldn't be pegging the meter like that. That indicates something is wired wrong or your regulator is not working.

Did you leave the FLD and BAT jumpered together? You should only touch them together MOMENTARILY. Once they touch, the generator is polarized.

You POLARIZE the genny by momentarily flash jumping BAT over to GEN/ARM NOTTTTTTTTT FLD

Are you at Pos or Neg ground???

The genny can still charge at EITHER polarity (Pos or Neg ground) once polarized HOWEVER if you swapped polarity the ammeter will read bass ackwards and require a lead reversal to make it register properly.

If the ammeter is wired correct if you turn on lights or ignition NOT running it should swing over to - discharge. If it does the opposite its leads need reversed or else reverse batery polarity and re polarize the genny BEFORE start up.

You need to insure correct wiring,,,,,,,,determine Pos or Neg ground,,,,,,, Correctly Polarize before start up,,,,,,,see what happens.

Run my Troubleshootign procedure to see if non charging is a genny or VR problem

John T hit this on the head!
If you held the jumper wire from bat to field even for 2 seconds, it may have smoked the regulator. The field terminal is a ground through a set of points in the regulator. Jumping to it can weld the points together.
If it was a dramatic spark, or you held it there for a few seconds, there may be repurcussions.
The others are correct in that the battery is supposed to be pos ground. Turn on the lights (not running) if the amp gauge goes right, (either the battery is in backwards, or someone has set it up for the battery to be in with negetive ground. Jim

Yo Jimbo, I agree with you and myself lol Yep a direct battery connection to the FLD terminal causes a very high current to flow through the field relay contacts which normally switch only a few amps. However if they welded shut as you mentioned (and no other harmful affects) that should make her always charge at high charge similar to when we dead ground the FLD for diagnostics YET SHE SHOULD STILL CHARGE (if all else okay). BUTTTTTT if the current (when he jumped FLD to BAT) was too high it may have burned the field circuit OPEN thereby the gennys Field NEVER sees the ground needed to charge, Id say thats more apt to be what ruined the VR (a burned open winding) then its contacts got welded shut, although either still ruins the VR and BOTH may have resulted........Im only saying if all that happened was the contacts welded she ought to still charge but if the winding also opened NO CHARGE, NO TICKY NO LAUNDRY LOL

I enjoy our sparky chats

But if it was actually charging full (appears to discharge due to either amp gauge backward, or new system stuff neg ground, it would show discharge when actually charging. He didn't say that it discharges whenever the battery is connected? interesting!!! Jim
