Hydro. Change in 1957 Model 230

Found a 230 Farmall that does not have the third hydro. lever to operate the back end. Have never saw one like this. Was there a change in the later tractors made in 1957 from the earlier made ones in 1957 models.

I am looking at pictures of two different 240 Tractors and hitches are different on them. Once appears to be made in the late 1957 and dont know when the other was made. Wondering if there was a change in the way they were made during 1957.

I've got a '57 230...serial "171_ J" (I haven't found an earlier one yet). Not sure what you mean about the lift lever...does your 230 have a fast hitch? A couple of pics would mean a bunch in deciphering what you mean. My 230 has an early FH (circa Super C type). They changed it later. shrps74

Thanks for the information. We were able to find pictures of different 230 Tractors and were able to decide that they definatley made a change in them. The tractor i am looking at to purchase was made in the late 1957.

No, there was no change.

A Farmall 230 could be purchased with either of two different hydraulic systems.

1. Touch Control - Just like the C, Super C, and 200. Two levers for the rockshafts, and an optional "third lever" for the optional Fast Hitch.

2. Hydra Touch - Most 230's came with this system. There are no rockshaft arms under the gas tank, only a reservoir for fluid. There is only ONE lever which either operated the Fast Hitch or a hydraulic remote.

By the way, tractors are not produced as model year like cars and trucks are.

Only minor changes are made in a model run such as a C or a 230. The big changes in the C resulted in the Super C, then more changes for the 200.

Options are a different thing. With or without fast hitch, hydraulics, or PTO, and lights or starter in earlier tractors are not an issue of model year but in options ordered from the factory or added at the dealer (like wide front ends or special seats).

Also, when changes were made to a model they would generally use up old parts and castings before installing the newer ones. If two changes were made at the same time, there will be tractors which have one and not the other because there were more of one part in the system which had to be used up before the new ones were installed.

There were really very few changes made in any model runs by IH but they were made at serial number breaks, not by model year introductions. for instance for the Farmall M there was an introduction late in the model run of disc brakes which were then standard on the Super M.
