Front wheel assist

Got to thinkin about how some add the front wheel assist on IH tractors like 806 1206 and many others. Was wondering if anyone has ever did it on a Super M or something like it. I know it may some dumb but I think a M or H with the front wheel assist would look cool. Would be a neat show tractor or pulling rig maybe. Just thinkin......

There were FWA systems made for Ms but not for Hs
Every thing can be made, but it would be pricey to do. Jim

You are a "day late and a dollar short". Well, maybe many dollars short

The concept has already been conceived and many M thru 660 FWA's have been built. The early Elwoods would interchange between models in that size/line of tractor with only minor modificatiions.

Goto the archives in Classic View and search on Elwood. Plenty of pictures including internal shots of the transfer case.

No H sized FWA's were built. If you wanted to build one based on the Elwood design, I think you would need $10,000-$15,000 to build the first one. They might be cheaper after that because the patterns and tooling would have been developed.

I don't know about underpowered, but I've heard that you need a football field to turn them around.

Now, if you know a master toolmaker with the equipment, there's no reason you couldn't add MFWD using a heavy DANA or ROCKWELL steering axle. The L-shaped gearbox that transfers the power up out of the belt pulley hole, out and down the right side of the tractor can be fabricated from plate steel. The difficult part would be getting the gear ratios correct.

This is a picture of one that I got off of a post from the farmall forum.

That's just math and requires no heavy lifting or significant crainial exercise. You could lay out the fixed values and plug in the variables on a spreadsheet. Just have to be careful to slightly overspeed the front axle and make sure you are using the loaded radius of the front and rear tires.

My 660 Elwood turns tighter than my standard wheelbase pickup.

There are other ways to get FWA. Pull power from one bull pinion shaft and install a locking rear drive. Or you could do it like the Ford County tractors built in England. Run two driveshafts from the rear up to the front right-angle gearboxes/spindles. Or cobble up two H's and build an articulated H. Or do it like that tri-axle JD 720.

I always wondered how they made those County tractors work with the full-size front tires without causing them to run uphill dramatically. They must have incredible traction, if you can keep from tearing up transmissions... It looks like you can't spin just one wheel in the mud.

Wardner, the Ford 4x4 is AWESOME! I'd like more info if you had some on them. I like Ford's 2nd to Farmall's. That tractor is a beast.

That's the first one I have ever seen. "Don't know much about biology" etc. You should probably search on "County" at Yt Tractor Talk or the Ford Forum. I have hard that they were not very reliable. I have also heard that they mostly sold in the Northeast. It is currently at Salem Tractor Supply in NY.

Here's a few more pictures:

Duals are no where near the same as having front wheel assist. Takes alot more power to turn front wheels than duals
