Hi, I am looking at purchasing a Farmall Tractor to Restore. It seems to be a 230 Farmall. May have some changes made to it. The Serial number is 5962 J. Is this a 230 Farmall and what year was it made. What does the "J" Stand for? Thanks Diana

It was produced in late 1957. Most of the 230's were produced in 1957 and 1958 with a few in 1956.

I believe the J signifies a Rockford clutch, a very common designation.

Thanks for the information Andy and Andrew. The Hood on the tractor on both sides where the emblems go has two small holes above the Farmall emblem and two small holes below the 230 emblem on both sides of the hood. Is that suppose to be like that or has someone maybe put a hood on the tractor from a different model tractor. Diana

Well, the two holes above the Farmall emblem should have small metal McCormick emblems.

As for BELOW the 230... Hmm, I'm not sure what would be there.

If you look at the serial number tag carefully you may be able to make out some other information that was originally silk-screened on there.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Some numb-nuts could've put a 230 hood on a Super C, or 230 emblems on a 300 utility, and all this talk would be for nothing.

Look up some pictures of a Farmall 230 on imagesDOTgoogleDOTcom. Do they look like what you have? Pay careful attention to details, such as to where the steering shaft goes, and the size and number of slots in the grille. Sorta-red with big wheels in the back does not count.
