300U shifting problem(all to the rear)

Have a 300U that has a problem shifting into the rearward shifting gears (1st,3nd,5th). The forward shifting gears all work great (Rev,2nd,4th). Think thats pattern correct, but anyway its the rearward shifting gears anyway.

Having NO issues with getting the transmission in two gears at once just shifting. This weekend added 3 or 4 gallons of diesel to the transmission and drove it around till good and warm and drained and refilled case to the check plug.Boy,was that nasty looking stuff.

This is a NON-TA tractor from the factory.

Could the shifter tip be worn so the rearward gears are not getting engaged ? The rearward shifting gears are the ones that move the shifter rails forward. Can remove the shifter and using a screwdriver shift into the gears in question. It is kinda stubborn but no more so than the correctly shifting gears.

Does anyone have a picture or dimensions of what the correct tip should look like? That would be a great help as this is the only we have seen. Found post with a picture of a H shifter with dimensions but not sure those would be correct for a 300U.

If each set of 3 rails and forks works different gears sets and all 3 rearward gears are very hard to shift into would not the shifter be the common point of failure? Or am I totally barking up the wrong tree?

As always any advise or opinions are always welcome.

I am confused by the paragraph (near the end) starting with "If each set of three rails and forks" There are three rails, and three forks.
There is a slot in each rail that the tip of the shifter moves in. It moves one entire rail forward and rearward in 1-R It is the right most rail looking down in the hole while seated.
Gears 2-3 ues the center rail and 4-5 use the left rail.
The slots must be aligned when in neutral to allow any rail to be selected.
If the rails can be moved into all gears with a screw driver, it is the shifter that is at fault.
It may have a very worn pivot pin, or it could be bent, limiting its travel. I hope this helps. keep in touch, Jim

Sorry about the confusing statement. What I trying to say,if there are separate 3 shift rails(R-1,2-3,4-5) and each has its own fork and all the rear shifting gears are difficult to engage it looks like the common problem could be in the shifter.

I did not think to inspect the shifter pivot pin but that would make sense if was worn or bent. That will be the next thing we check.

Still wondering what the tip dimensions should be so I can tell if the shifter tip in need of rebuilding.

Thanks for the help , it is appreciated

enerally they wear shch that the tip comes out of the rail befor the rail gets in neutral.then it allows two gears at once. If your tip is looked at you will see where the most wear is located. The H tip should be good to use. The method is to weld up the tip a small amount, and grind it to be just small enough to work well (bigger than worn, and smaller than sticking in the grooves. Jim
