Farmall M Rough Idle Problem

I have a recently purchased Farmall M. I have replaced the points, condenser, rotor, dist. cap, plugs and wires. I have had the carb. rebuilt by Denny"s carb shop, but I still have a little rough idle problem. When you try to get the tractor to idle real slow, it gets a little rough, I can"t seem to adjust the carb to get it to smooth out withoug raising the idle way up. Once you speed up the tractor, it smoothes right out, but just doesn"t seem to idle very slow and still be smooth. Does anyone out there have any suggestions as to what to look for? I"ve been told since the fact that people don"t like Denny"s. Any specific reason? Could it still be the carb? Thanks for any advise!!

If you don't feel it's a resrtiction in the carburetor you may have a small air leak in the intake manifold gasket.

I had my carb done by Denny's about 10 years ago and it has never been a problem since. I think they do good work, but charge very high prices.

Try retarding timing a little with timing set for best top end performance they tend to idle a little rough especially with magneto.

I paid Denny's carb shop $210.00 with shipping. The carb looked like new when I got back. I called Denny's to question them about their work and I got some lady on the line who wasn't real nice. She got on the defensive right away, so I just figured that I would let it go till I was sure it was the carb. I really was just asking about their procedure for rebuilding and the lady just got defensive right away when I told her my problem. I wasn't impressed with the way she handled the situation at all.

I've got an M carburetor laying on my workbench that was rebuilt by Denny's before it was sent to me for repairs. There was no hope for that carburetor so I accepted it as a core, but I was able to salvage only a few pieces out of it. The throttle body had been modified and whoever was running the milling machine that day did not know what they were doing and basically turned it into a very interesting paperweight.

That "lady" has come up many times on this and the Red Power forum. Your comments are nearly identical to others who have posted. Meaning "how dare you question our work".

Down South we call her a "[i:d3440235f7]Bee-Yatch[/i:d3440235f7]"

I have 2 carbs from Dennys, one on my C and one on my M,I put them on and didn"t mess with them just like they said and the both Idle so low I wonder how they run.I"ve had no problems with either.

Try $395.00 Really outragious. But I didn't know any better at the time. That price did include glass beading but don't remember if it included any replacement internal parts.

Jim R: Had the same problem with my M. Found it was a dime sized hole between the exhaust and intake sides in the manifold.

Hello Rustyfarmall, Do you do repairs on "M" carbs for other people? If so, I will send you mine if it looks like it is the carb. I will check out all these suggestions, and carefully though. Please let me know. Thanks, Jim

Yes.

check to make sure the rotor is tight on the dist. shaft. if it has alot of play it will idle rough but seem to run fine. if its loose, take a piece of aluminum foil and push the rotor on over the foil and pull off any excess.
