574 Still Having 3pt/Hydraulic Problems

Hi, Guys!
As you may have read previously, I recently got a 1974 IH 574. The 3 pt. hitch/hydraulic remote quit working right after I got it....so I changed the hyd. fluid and the filter, and it worked great for a while- picked up a big round bale of hay with no problem, and let me disc my neighbors 3 or 4 acre field with a wheel disc.....
But now, every time I use it, the 3pt/hydraulics work when I first start the tractor up, but quit shortly thereafter. I then have to let the tractor sit, and when I come back to it hours later or the next day, the hydraulics work fine.....for a short time, and then quit again (When you move the lever for the remote, you don't even hear the pump coming on when it's in "not working" mode).
Does this sound like the filter needs to be changed again (this can get expensive! I haven't put but naybe 3 or 4 hours on the tractor since the first change).
Also, is there a way to clean out hydraulic system without taking the whole tractor apart? It's a great tractor except for this problem....but this is really getting annoying!
Any advice appreciated!

Hi Richie, do I understand the Power Steering works fine?
Then here is an old post from Bernard for 454 but 574 is the same. I don't know if you want to delve into the MCV valve. I would suggest a repair manual first.

Hi Joe, on the 454, the hydraulic pump feeds the steering in priority, then the remote, hitch, PTO and brake. The flow-divider valve gives 3 GPM to the steering and 9 GPM to the hitch system. When the valve is stuck in the bottom, you have no steering, no PTO and if stuck in top, you have no hitch, no remote. On MCV remove the plug and the spring, put a container under the hole, start the engine and pull the remote lever. The flow-divider valve goes out in the container. Sand the valve with a 400 sand-paper and try again. Change the filter if it's old. May be you have dirt in the oil, check in the filter housing when you open it. When the filter is full of dirt, it have a by-pass valve that
open and allow the oil to go direct to the pump via a screen. In this case, dirt can go in the
system and cause your problem. Hope this helps you.

Hey, Jim!

If I remember correctly the MCV valve is right under the filter housing- the larger of the two bolt-heads that stick out on the underside?

You are correct- this time the P/S, brakes and PTO all work fine (Last time, it was affecting the P/S)

This will be my next step.

By-the-way, if I am correc t and the MCV is the thicker of the two bolts on the underside by the filter housing, and idea what the thinner one right next to it is? (You're right...I should get a manual). I'd kind of like to clean that one, too, while I'm at it...but not knowing what it is, I might be opening up a can of woms......

Thanks once again for all the help!!

Rich
