1066 plow match

What do you guys think? 5x14 oliver plows? Or 5x18 international 720's Witch is the best match? Or would it pulla 6 bottom?

I pull 6X16's with my 10. No problem but some soils pull harder than others. 5X18 would only be six inches narrower.

IN SW Wisconsin it wont. Maybe if you weighted the hell out of the tractor it would. I tried it once and it wont. Go with the smaller plow.

I always wonder when this question comes up. Answer is depends on how deep you are going to pull them. Our JD 4430 has a tough time pulling 4-16's but then I don't just pull them 8" deep...more like 10" to 12". I would think the 1066 is about the same HP. I would love to pull a 4-16 with my 856 but unless I'm only going out for show and not real work there ain't no way.

It's not real heavy soil but it does compact or get hard from spring to spring. After hearing what guys pull with their various tractors I figured a 4-16 spinner on a 120hp tractor would be the cat's meow... It does it but thats all it wants and I know their set right since the center point on the 3 point hitch doesn't have any tension or compression when their running. My 856 would never pull 4-16's as deep as I want to go with them.
You can see my #39 post over in the implements section. I'm pulling those 12" deep and it's not hard work for the 856 but if I added a 3rd bottom then it would be earning it's keep. Put a 4th bottom on and then I would be just hurting the tractor in the long run.

Had a neighbor when I was a kid that had two 806's and a 1206. Pulled a 5-14 and a 5-16 with the 8's and a 6-16 with the 1206. Stepped along in low 4th with no problem. He had a tendency to turn the pump up a little but then wanted us to run it 4th which we did most of the time. Didn't have them weighted down that much. Good soil but hilly. He was plowing at least 8" deep. The 1206 didn't like it when plowing old alfalfa fields. The soil and terrain is the big factor.

Both plows are good but I'll take the 720, their trip doesn't pull rocks as much as the olivers. For you guys that are not so fortunate to have rocks disregard this post

Yeah, it really depends on what you're trying to plow. On Dad's farm, 5-16s is a handful for a 2WD 1066 at times. Not because of power, but because of traction. I think there are 4 or 5 sets of rear weights on the 1066, nearly new 20.8 radials filled with calcium/water solution, and that tractor will still sit on top and spin.

If you've got MFWD, you could probably pull 7-18s in easy plowing ground.

I have a 1456 and a 710 6-16 plow and pull it just fine. Our soil ranges from muck to clay. Of course the clay pulls harder, still does a good job. Might have to pull ta every now and then, but run L4. Have fluid in tires and use dual on left side. This tractor is running about 140hp.

We pull 4-16s with our IH 756 in our forest derived soils. A 1066 should handle something much bigger than what you suggested.

I never plow more than 4 to 5 inches. There is no reason to go deeper, waste of fuel and machine. If you want to break hardpan get a subsoiler.
