Buying 1486

I'm going to look at a 1486, this weekend, and would like to go armed with the facts...

Firstly, it is important to know that this is the UK, and these tractors are private import only, and were never sold here, officially.

Secondly, I am a service engineer, and have worked for a New Holland dealership, in one of my past lives :) I only tell you this, so you know I am savy enough to check for generic faults.

What I'm lacking is a source of (reliable) information/advice regarding the known faults and indicators for these tractors.

My main concern is that I will overlook some minor fault, unaware that it is the only the surface manifestation of a more serious failure!

With this in mind, I'd really appreciate your input regarding the known problems and associated warning signs. I'm aware that this series of tractor was very popular in the US, so I'm hoping there is a wealth of knowledge available.

In advance; Many Thanks!

A 1486 is a good tractor if not abused. The following link has some of the most knowlegable IH people I know of. Many also visit here. You might ask the same over there and have several opinions to work with.

(quoted from post at 02:21:33 04/16/10) Watch for shift linkage problems and torque amplifier problems. How many hours does it show?

I spoke to the guy last night, but he did not know how many hours the tractor had done.

What I do know is that it's an Australian import, so will have suffered the effects of a dry, dusty, hot climate, for most of it's working life.

I also know it's spent most of it's 3 years in the UK, in storage, so will have suffered the effects of being stood too...

What kind of symptoms am I looking for on the T/A? I believe there are issues with cable adjustment, and hydraulic pressure? I am familiar with the Ford 'Dual Power' system, as fitted to 10 series and TW tractors; is the T/A a similar principle (two speed planetary with spool valve operation)?

Many thanks

As long as they have kept the engine and cab filters clean and maintained a dry dusty climate means nothing to these tractors and beats the abuse they would receive fighting mud and extreme cold in most parts of the US.
