Super A question

I am fixin' to go into surgery on my '47 Super A to replace the front crank seal. I have mechanical experience on HVAC equipment but not so much on engines or tractors. Is there any advice anyone can provide on this? I have friends that can come to my rescue if I start to lose her but I really want to do this myself and learn from doing.

Your biggest stumbling block may be the crankshaft pulley. Do not use a standard 3-jaw puller on it. It requres way too much force, and a 3-jaw will definitely break it.

Some people on here have built pullers from heavy steel and bottle jacks.

You have to remove the steering assy that bolts to the block because the pulley will no clear the crank. Then you need a bearing seperateor with a three jaw puller and mite even need to use some heat.

Here is the puller I built few years back. I have included all measurements. I built a new since this one, I used 5/8 all-thread instead of the 3/4 since it is what I had to use to press the pulley back on the crankshaft.HTH

If ya need any other info email me

This is how I put the pulley back on. I used 5/8 althread for this.

Boy am I getting forgetful, I used a port-a-power to remove my pulley, but there are some hydraulic jacks that will work laying on their side like the one I show on how I install the pulley. Friend of mine used a hydraulic jack.

Sorry for not including this in the first post.

Thanks for the pictures. The more I am reading and understanding I believe I will take up my buddies offer of his shop and experience. Thanks everyone for their input.
