Char-Lynn power steering, is it factory?

Hello, I just purchased a 300 and I'm trying to order manuals for it but I don't know if the CharLynn power steering unit is aftermarket or will be covered in the GSS-1069 manual. The unit itself is about the size and shape of a soup can mounted in the steering shaft just forward of the U-joint under the hood. Thank you very much, Devin

Char-Lynn is an aftermarket set-up. Behlen units were used by the factory on the hundred series and were run off the hydra-touch system. In my opinion the Char-Lynn units are alot better. They are less troublesome and easy to get parts for. Several different ways to plumb them up, most common is probably a belt pump mounted off the side of the governor. Anyway, not sure if any IH manual will cover Char-Lynn but manuals for them can be found on eBay from time to time. You can also print them off from Char-Lynns' website. Most likely you have an older model torque generator that will cross to the 217 series.

IH started buying the Charlynn with the 504 and similar tractors.

Before that they used the bulky Behlen on 300-400 and 350-450. It was installed over the engine valve cover on the shaft that goes into the steering gearbox.

I am guessing that the Charlynn had not been developed before the 1960's.

My 504 has a Char-Lynn and it has started leaking at the input shaft (steering wheel end). I have wondered where to find parts.

You can get them from most any hydraulic shop. Im sure they can be found online or there is an ebay member that sells the seal kits (I think the user id is hydsalvager).

Thanks! I have been putting it off and I really need to repair before it gets worse. I'll check EBAY first. that is my 1-Stop for most things.

Matt. Nothing like learning by doing huh? You built a nice char lyn system piece by piece for a bargain price and became the CharLyn Guru in the process. Attaboy!

IH dealers were installing CharLyn kits on the letter series starting in 1957. At least that is the earliest year Saginaw pump I have seen used.
In 57 they used the Saginaw pump that was standard for PS in the famous Studebaker Golden Hawk.

Dad bought a used JD 60 and new 227 picker in [u:5d92d690e7]1958[/u:5d92d690e7] and had the dealer in Elkader, Ia install a Charlynn unit with a GM (Saginaw)pump before it was delivered.
I am retired from Eaton who owns Charlynn now. Last I knew they were built in the Shawnee, Ok plant. Parts should still be available for most of them.
