Super A engine ran backwards and blew oil

I had an odd one happen to me the other day... Went to start up the Super A and I wasn't quite quick enough on the choke. It fired but didn't catch and run.

What it did do was make a rumbling noise for about a second, and then it blew a bunch of oil out the air cleaner!

It was the darndest ting I've ever seen. I can only conclude that the engine was rolling over backwards for some reason, causing it to blow the oil out the intake.

It simply blew oil up and out of the oil cup on the bottom of the air filter.

The air inlet tube hangs below the surface of the oil in the cup, when the engine blew air backwards through the aircleaner it simply scooted the oil cup oil up the inlet tube.

(While it's an odd occurrence with a gas engine, it was a REAL common thing with the Deere 2 cylinder diesel. BTDT.)

Yup, I knew where the oil came from. I'd just never seen it happen before and thought it was pretty weird.

I have had it happen routinely. After ha hard day on the tillage equipment, they M-SH-350-400 and others would sometimes preignite on shutdown and run backwards. Usually the oil was so well dispersed in the metal mesh above the cup, that they didn't blow oil all over, but smoked radically out the intake. Some 2 strokes can and will run backwards With serious issues if pressurized oil systems are involved, or no worse for wear if oil in the gas. My great friend in my teens had a Harley 165 hummer that often ran backwards. Jim

I've got a few that try to do that, I try to kill them in gear and hit the clutch with the brake set to get the engine stopped.

I've never had it happen on a little tractor like an A or C.

Some 2 cycles are designed to run backwards or forwards. I have an old EZ Go 2 cycle gasoline golf cart. There are no gears for reverse, the engine just runs backwards.
