Before I go and tear this ole H apart, can someone confirm that the bull pinion /brake shaft is NOT suppose to have excessive play (grab a hold of the brake drum and move it freely up, down, left, or right)? The weird part is that when I pushed it ahead a few feet to get the garage closed up, the excess play disappeared. Would this be because the ball bearings aligned themselves in the cage such that they took up the movement? Just trying to avoid the doing something I don't need (still got a sick feeling).

Thanks for the info. Kevin

There SHOULD be a very minimal amount of play, but you would need a dial indicator to detect it.

That bearing is SHOT! Time to tear into it.

ST201 outer bull pinion shaft bearing and ST227 inner differencial bearing from CIH.

ST201 = $60.00 ea

ST227 = $99.01 ea

Would you believe that these are still made for my 67 year old H? Go Red!

You have to realize that the inside end of the bull pinion shaft is supported by the side gear in the differential. These old diff's get pretty worn and allow that gear to move up and down quite a lot. Grabbing ahold of the end of the bull pinion shaft you may very well be feeling that gear moving up and down. You will have to look closely at the bearing to determine if the play is in the bearing itself or the diff. This is common setup on all these style tractors until later larger models like 706 went to a straddle mounted bull pinion with tapered roller bearings on each side of gear. The 656 used a needle bearing or bushing inside the differential to support that end of shaft and tapered roller bearing on the outer end.
