Power beyond conversion

I'm in the process of adding a couple Prince remote controll hydraulic valves on to my SMTA. I ordered a "power beyond" conversion along with the valves so I can install them in line with each other. The problem is that I have no idea where the plug goes. No instructions came with either the plug or the valves.

Thanks for the help.

It would be helpful if we knew what was in the kit. A picture would be even better.

The IH solution for one remote double acting hydraulic circuit was the Christmas Tree valve. They were installed on SMTAs as well but you don't need it as you already have spool valves.

When the live power option became available, the reservoir was repositioned under the gas tank. On the back (left) side (facing operator) are three ports. Use the bottom 1/2" port to run a pressure line to your valve. Run the return back to the reservoir or the next valve. If I recall correctly, there is a plug on left side of the reservoir for return oil. If not, install a tee at the fill plug.

You will have to hold the liftall lever back while operating the Prince valve. Or you can lock the lever back by rotating the small tang attached to the reservoir.

Not sure why they sent you a plug.

To set a valve up with power beyond, it requires a special "plug". the plug threads into the valve and is threaded inside for the hydraulic connection. I used a Prince 3 spool on my F504 and used a power beyond plug. Or maybe I had to plug one port and install the PB plug elsewhere. The PB unit is like 1 1/2" to 2" long I think. I'll look at it tomorrow and see what I did. I have slept since then :) Have you went to Prince's website?

Charles, I think the power beyond stuff was first seen on the 04 and 06.

This is probably why the thread author is confused. He is working on a SMTA.

I had a completely stock F504. It has open center hydraulics. To add a circuit in-line with the OEM you have to go power beyond. The valve bank could be open, closed, or power beyond. I believe it was set up for open center. With special plug it could be closed center and with a special sleeve it was PB. I have the document here somewhere...

Charles,

I was looking at that same Field Master cylinder last night. While the price was OK at $59, the shipping was high at $27 ea. I found two identical cylinders on eBay for $30 ea plus $17 ea shipping. They said they would discount the shipping for more than one item. I will probably order in a few days after I decide exactly what I need for size.

I appreciate your posting those links. that explains my confusion. What was sent to me was something like a 1/8 pipe plug (what I recall the closed center plug looking like) even though the package says power beyound conversion. The fitting shown on the Surplus center link is more like what I expected. Hence my confusion. I guess I'll just hafta see if I can get something locally... In a rush now to get my plow in the ground...

Thanks Again,

Ben

Ben,

Why do you think you need power beyond on an SMTA?

The only reason power beyond would be necessary on an SMTA is if you already have the christmas tree valve, and want to add more valves, AND use both simultaneously.

If you don't already have a two-way valve, do this:

1. Mount the spool valve in a convenient location.
2. Connect the upper pressure outlet pipe from the hydraulic reservoir under the gas tank to the IN on your spool valve.
3. Connect the OUT from the spool valve to one of the return plugs on the hydraulic reservoir. There's a 1" pipe plug on the reservoir body that the christmas tree valve normally drains into that you can use.
4. Run lines from the work ports on the spool valve to the rear of the tractor, and add quick couplers.

You will need to tie the lever on the hydraulic reservoir back to make the system work. BUT that is how it was done in the day. That is "stock" normal operation, how it was designed.

This is far from stock but is right. No tying handles back to make a valve bank work. I tied into the system hydraulics before the system pressure relief. My OEM remotes are 1600 psi. My loader remotes are at 2000 psi.

Charles,

This is a Super MTA we're talking about here. It only has 1-way hydraulics from the factory, even though they are live.

The hydraulics are still called "LiftAll" even on the live system.

Just like all the other letter series, to get 2-way hydraulics you need to plumb a 2-way valve into the output from the LiftAll, and lock the LiftAll's lever back.

There is no other way to do it on a letter series tractor without doing a hack-job on the system.

Ah, I did not catch that previously. I assumed the liftall and belly pump were single acting and the live hydraulics was double acting. This is good to know because I was thinking of getting a SM or SMD for my next project. If I get one I will not need a loader, but would like (or add) double acting remotes. Along with live hyd and live (IPTO) if available.
